KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – AirAsia X (AAX) continues its bold expansion on the international aviation map with the official launch of its first-ever direct flight route from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul, Türkiye. This strategic move not only marks AAX’s debut entry into the Turkish market, but also opens a new chapter for Malaysian travellers longing to explore Europe and West Asia at far more affordable prices.
The new service will operate direct from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). The choice of SAW is seen as strategic, as it serves as a major hub on the Asian side of Istanbul, providing convenient access to multiple destinations across Türkiye and the wider Eastern European region.
A Mission to Expand Low-Cost Long-Haul Travel
The CEO of AAX stated that this new route is part of the airline’s long-term strategy to expand its low-cost long-haul network, offering competitive alternatives to existing full-service carriers.
“Istanbul, a city rich in history, culture, and renowned as the meeting point of two continents, has always been a dream destination for Malaysians. With AAX’s direct service, we not only shorten travel time, but more importantly, we make the dream of visiting iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus an affordable reality,” he said in a statement.
Strong Support for Visit Malaysia Year 2026
The launch of this new route is also aligned with the government’s efforts to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (TMM2026). Enhanced air accessibility between Malaysia and key markets in Europe and West Asia is expected to drive greater tourist exchange — not only sending Malaysians to Istanbul, but also attracting travellers from Türkiye and neighbouring countries to visit Malaysia.
Tourism analysts predict that this route will become a catalyst for the growth of the long-haul budget travel segment, enabling more Malaysians to plan longer and more fulfilling vacations to regions previously perceived as expensive or difficult to reach.
