Lecturer Loses Nearly RM1 Million to Fake Investment Scam

Melaka, El Sky News – A female lecturer in Malaysia has reportedly lost almost RM1 million after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme advertised on social media. According to police reports, the victim was approached through Instagram and later WhatsApp, where she was instructed to download an application claiming to facilitate stock trading investments.

Between early September and mid-October, the lecturer transferred a total of RM914,758.82 in 20 separate transactions to nine different bank accounts. The scammers promised high returns—sometimes claiming up to 1,000 percent within minutes—but failed to deliver any profits. Instead, the victim was pressured to pay an additional RM20,000 “quarterly fee” to access her supposed earnings.

Police received the official complaint on November 23, 2025, and the case is currently under investigation for fraud under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Authorities have cautioned the public to be wary of investment schemes that promise unusually high or rapid returns, especially when funds are requested to be deposited into personal bank accounts rather than official financial channels.

This incident highlights a recurring pattern in Malaysia, where individuals from various professional backgrounds—including lecturers, government officers, and retirees—have fallen prey to scams exploiting social media platforms. Experts stress that thorough verification of any investment platform through regulatory bodies such as the Securities Commission or Bank Negara Malaysia is essential before committing any funds.
