Kedah Revitalizes Iconic Tourist Attractions: Gunung Keriang Lift and Sungai Sedim Canopy Walk Upgraded

ALOR SETAR, El Sky News – The State Government of Kedah Darul Aman is actively carrying out rehabilitation and upgrading works on several iconic tourism products in preparation for the upcoming Visit Kedah Year (TMK) 2025, which will also serve as a warm-up before the larger Visit Malaysia Year (TMM) 2026 campaign.

The primary focus of this latest tourism initiative includes the reactivation of long-awaited facilities for visitors: the lift project at Gunung Keriang and maintenance work on the Tree Top Walk (Canopy Walk) at Sungai Sedim Recreational Forest, Kulim.

Gunung Keriang Lift Set to Be a Peak Attraction

Gunung Keriang, famous for its unique limestone formation and breathtaking natural caves, is seen as one of the main locations expected to receive a surge of tourists.

The relevant Executive Councillor (Exco) reportedly visited the site at Gunung Keriang, demonstrating the state authorities’ seriousness in developing the area.

A close source informed that the lift project at Gunung Keriang is expected to provide easier access for all segments of society, including the elderly and Persons with Disabilities (OKU), to enjoy the panorama of Kedah from the hill’s peak. This facility is seen as elevating Gunung Keriang’s value from merely a recreational area to a more inclusive and modern attraction.

Sungai Sedim Tree Top Walk Reinforced

In southern Kedah, the Sungai Sedim Recreational Forest, which houses the Tree Top Walk—the longest tropical rainforest canopy walkway in the world—is being reinforced.

Sungai Sedim is known as a key destination for ecotourism and extreme water sports, particularly White Water Rafting and jungle exploration. Maintenance work on the canopy walk here is crucial to ensuring visitors’ safety and comfort are guaranteed, as this steel structure is a main draw offering the unique experience of walking 50 meters above the forest floor.

Given Sungai Sedim’s proximity to the Jerai Geopark, this initiative will expand the ecotourism packages offered, thereby attracting nature lovers and avid adventurers.

Target of Seven Million Tourists for TMK 2025

Under the theme ‘Experience Kedah,’ the State Government has allocated specific funds for TMK 2025 and is targeting approximately seven million tourist arrivals throughout the campaign year.

The infrastructure upgrade at key locations like Gunung Keriang and Sungai Sedim is part of more than 100 new events and tourism products organized across five main components: Natural Resources, Gastronomy, Arts, Culture, and History.

Kedah’s proactive step in modernizing and conserving existing attractions is seen as a timely and strategic move, positioning the rice bowl state on the national and international tourism map before Malaysia welcomes TMM 2026.
