KOTA BHARU, El Sky News – Kelantan Police have successfully crippled a motorcycle theft syndicate active around Kota Bharu and Tumpat, known as the ‘Geng Mat Rodi’ (Mat Rodi Gang), after arresting five local men in a special operation conducted on Wednesday.
The arrest of all suspects, aged between 20 and 35, is believed to have solved at least five cases of low-powered motorcycle thefts in targeted areas, which were reported since early November.
Kota Bharu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Nor Azmi, confirmed in a media statement today that the apprehension of the suspects was the result of thorough intelligence gathering and monitoring carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Kota Bharu District Police Headquarters (IPD).
Modus Operandi: ‘Selling Cheap Spare Parts’
According to Mohamad Nor Azmi, the modus operandi used by ‘Geng Mat Rodi’ was to target popular motorcycle models like the Honda EX5 and Yamaha 135LC parked in residential areas and eateries without strict supervision.
“Preliminary investigations found that after the motorcycles were stolen, the suspects would dismantle the vehicles into spare parts within 24 hours. These spare parts were then sold at a much lower price through social media platforms to a third party,” he explained.
The operation also led to the seizure of several items believed to be used in their criminal activities, including:
- Three dismantled motorcycles (in a cut-up condition).
- Equipment for cutting and removing motorcycle locks.
- Communication devices.
Facing Remand and Charges
All five suspects are currently remanded for seven days to allow further investigation to be conducted under Section 379A of the Penal Code (KK) for motor vehicle theft, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term of not less than one year and not exceeding seven years, and a fine.
The police believe that with the arrest of the group’s leader and key members, the rate of motorcycle theft in the Kota Bharu district and its surrounding areas can be drastically reduced by the end of the year.
Mohamad Nor Azmi also advised the public to always take precautionary measures by using additional locks, especially when leaving motorcycles in public places for an extended period.
