Year-End Travel Surge: Train and bus tickets nearly sold out as Malaysia prepares for festive exodus

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Malaysia is witnessing a massive surge in domestic travel demand as the year-end holiday season and Christmas festivities approach. Public transportation providers have reported that tickets for popular routes, particularly from Kuala Lumpur to Penang and Kota Bharu, are nearly exhausted for the upcoming long weekend.

According to data from Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) and various express bus operators, the “balik kampung” (homecoming) phenomenon is in full effect. Tickets for the Electric Train Service (ETS) to northern destinations were snapped up weeks in advance, reflecting the high preference for rail travel among locals and tourists alike.

In response to the unprecedented demand, transport authorities have mobilized additional services. KTMB has confirmed the introduction of supplementary train frequencies to accommodate the overflow of passengers, while major express bus consortia are deploying extra fleets to ensure commuters can reach their destinations.

“The volume of travelers this year has significantly surpassed our initial projections,” stated a spokesperson for a leading transport hub in Kuala Lumpur. “We are seeing a dual trend: citizens returning to their hometowns and a high number of urban dwellers heading to tourist hotspots like Penang and the East Coast for the holiday break.”

Travel Advisory for Commuters:

  • Early Arrival: Passengers are advised to arrive at terminals—such as Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) and KL Sentral—at least one hour before departure to navigate the heavy holiday crowds.
  • Digital Check-ins: Travelers are encouraged to use mobile apps for ticketing and boarding to minimize physical contact and speed up the boarding process.
  • Road Safety: For those opting to drive, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has issued a travel time advisory (TTA) to help distribute traffic flow and reduce congestion on the North-South Expressway.

As the nation gears up for the final celebrations of 2025, the increased frequency of public transport serves as a vital link for families reuniting across the peninsula. While tickets for peak hours are limited, operators are urging the public to check for last-minute availability on late-night or early-morning slots.

With the tourism sector rebounding strongly, this holiday rush is seen as a positive indicator for Malaysia’s domestic economy, even as travelers are reminded to remain patient and prioritize safety during the busiest week of the year.
