MMEA Personnel Pleads Not Guilty to RM3,000 Bribery Charge in Sessions Court

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – A personnel member of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to a charge of accepting a bribe amounting to RM3,000. The accused made the plea after the charge was formally read out before the presiding judge, marking the commencement of the legal process.

The 38-year-old Petty Officer is alleged to have received the gratification as an inducement to refrain from taking enforcement action against a local fishing vessel for a suspected regulatory infringement. The incident reportedly occurred during a routine maritime patrol earlier this year.

Court Proceedings and Bail During the mention of the case, the prosecution emphasized the importance of public accountability, particularly for those serving in national enforcement agencies. However, the defense counsel argued for a reasonable bail amount, noting that the accused has a clean service record and has cooperated fully with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation.

After considering the arguments from both legal teams, the court granted bail at RM5,000 with one local surety. In addition to the bail, the court imposed several standard conditions:

• Travel Restrictions: The accused is required to surrender his passport to the court until the trial concludes.
• Monthly Reporting: The accused must report to the nearest MACC office on a monthly basis.

A Commitment to Integrity The MMEA has maintained a firm stance on professional conduct, reiterating its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity among its staff. While the agency has not commented on the specific details of the ongoing case, it has reaffirmed its “zero-tolerance” policy regarding any form of misconduct that could undermine public trust in maritime security.

The case is being investigated under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009. If the matter proceeds to trial, it will provide an opportunity for all evidence to be examined within the framework of the Malaysian judicial system.

The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for February 2026 for the submission of documents and further case management. For now, the accused remains on bail as the legal proceedings continue.
