Joao Cancelo Secures Barcelona Return on Short-Term Loan Deal

BARCELONA, El Sky News – Portuguese international Joao Cancelo has officially completed a sensational return to FC Barcelona, securing a loan move from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal until the end of the current season.

The deal, finalized early Tuesday, marks a significant reinforcement for the Catalan giants as they head into the business end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Key Terms of the Agreement

According to reports, Barcelona will pay Al-Hilal a loan fee of approximately €4 million to secure the services of the 31-year-old full-back. The agreement does not reportedly include a mandatory purchase clause, focusing instead on immediate defensive coverage for the Blaugrana through June.

The transfer comes as a surprise to some, as Italian giants Inter Milan were previously thought to be the frontrunners. Inter had reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Al-Hilal last week; however, the move collapsed once Cancelo expressed his unwavering preference to return to Catalonia.

A Proven Asset

Cancelo is a familiar face at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. He enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with Barcelona during the 2023/24 season while still a Manchester City player. His versatility on both the right and left flanks made him a fan favorite and a tactical pillar for the squad.

Following that stint, Cancelo moved to Al-Hilal in the summer of 2024 in a permanent transfer worth roughly £21.4 million. Despite his success in Saudi Arabia, the defender’s desire to compete at the highest level in Europe remained a driving force behind this winter move.

Impact on the Squad

The re-acquisition of Cancelo provides manager Hansi Flick with a world-class option in defense. Barcelona has struggled with financial constraints and squad depth, making this low-cost loan an ideal solution to add veteran experience and technical quality to their backline.

Cancelo is expected to undergo medical examinations shortly before joining his teammates for training ahead of the upcoming La Liga fixtures.
