KOTA KINABALU, El Sky News – Melaka FC produced a masterclass performance at Likas Stadium on Wednesday night, defeating Sabah FC 3-0 in the second leg of the Malaysia Cup round of 16. This decisive victory saw the visitors advance to the quarter-finals with a convincing 5-2 aggregate score.
The match took a dramatic turn just before the halftime whistle. Sabah FC, who had been aggressively pushing for an opening goal, were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Gary Steven Robbat was shown a straight red card. The dismissal followed a VAR review which confirmed a dangerous foul on a Melaka player, leaving the home side in a vulnerable position for the remainder of the game.
Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Melaka FC broke the deadlock early in the second half. Egyptian striker Ahmed Shamsaldin fired a powerful shot into the net in the 50th month, shifting the momentum entirely in favor of the visitors.
Despite being a man down, Sabah FC attempted to fight back, but their defense crumbled late in the game. In the 86th minute, Che Rashid Che Halim doubled Melaka’s lead with a clinical finish. Shamsaldin then put the final nail in the coffin, scoring his second goal of the night shortly before the full-time whistle to seal a 3-0 win on the night.
“The red card was a turning point, but our players showed great discipline in utilizing the extra space,” said Melaka FC coaching staff.
Melaka FC is now set for a heavyweight clash in the quarter-finals, where they are expected to face the defending champions, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT). JDT currently holds a massive advantage in their respective round of 16 tie against PDRM FC.
