Malaysian Islamic Fund Dismisses False Claims of Free Hajj Travel Offer

KUALA LUMPUR — As the Muslim community enters the holy month of Ramadan, the Malaysian Islamic pilgrimage fund has firmly rejected widespread online claims that it is offering free Hajj travel to Malaysian pilgrims.

Social media posts circulating recently suggested that eligible Malaysians could register for a fully funded Hajj pilgrimage, prompting concern and confusion among the public. One TikTok video with the text “If you want free hajj, register now” appeared to promote the claim alongside clips of buses and pilgrims.

However, the fund — known locally as Tabung Haji — clarified that it does not provide fully free travel to Mecca. While the organization does offer some subsidies for eligible low-income Malaysians, it does not cover all expenses.

Officials also warned that fraudulent accounts and websites are impersonating Tabung Haji to solicit personal information from unsuspecting users. These fake offers often prompt users to enter their full names and phone numbers, potentially exposing them to scam risks.

Each year, Saudi Arabia allocates Hajj permits on a quota basis to participating countries, including Malaysia. The pilgrimage — one of the five pillars of Islam — is expected to take place in late May 2026, with Malaysian pilgrims beginning their journey in April. Costs for Malaysian pilgrims generally range from approximately RM15,000 to RM33,000 (around US$3,900–8,500), depending on income and eligibility for subsidies.

Tabung Haji urged the public to remain cautious and verify official channels before engaging with any online offers that appear too good to be true.
