Global White Sugar Prices Surge Over 8% in 10 Days as Supply Concerns Mount

Kuala Lumpur — Prices of white sugar in the international commodities market have recorded a sharp rebound over the past 10 days, signaling renewed bullish momentum driven by tightening global supply and rising energy costs.

Data from the Intercontinental Exchange (London ICE) shows that White Sugar #5 futures climbed from approximately $418.40 per tonne on March 10, 2026, to around $452.30 per tonne on March 19, 2026.

This represents a significant increase of about 8.1% within just over a week, reversing earlier losses seen at the start of the month.

📈 Sharp Late-Week Rally

The most notable surge occurred in the final days of the period. Prices jumped dramatically from around $413 on March 16 to above $450 by March 19, marking daily gains exceeding 3% in a single trading session.

This late rally highlights growing urgency among traders amid shifting global supply expectations.

🌍 Key Drivers Behind the Price Spike

1. Rising Crude Oil Prices

Higher global oil prices have encouraged major producers like Brazil to divert more sugarcane toward ethanol production instead of sugar. This shift reduces sugar supply in the global market, pushing prices higher.

2. Global Supply Deficit

Recent market reports indicate a transition from surplus to deficit, with the global sugar market projected to face a shortfall of around 1.5 million tonnes in the 2026/27 season. This tightening supply outlook has fueled bullish sentiment among investors.

3. Seasonal Demand Factors

In markets like Malaysia, domestic demand tends to rise ahead of festive periods. This has already translated into retail price increases ranging from 0.5% to 5% in certain areas, depending on sugar quality and supply conditions.

🧠 Market Outlook

With supply constraints looming and demand expected to remain firm, analysts believe sugar prices may continue to stay elevated in the near term. However, volatility remains a key risk, particularly if energy prices fluctuate or production forecasts improve.
