KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s hopes of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 have suffered a major setback after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ruled that the national team fielded ineligible players during the qualification campaign.
The decision resulted in two crucial victories being overturned and replaced with 3-0 defeats, effectively crippling Malaysia’s qualification chances.
Two Wins Erased, Heavy Sanctions Imposed
The matches affected were:
- Malaysia vs Nepal (March 25, 2025) – originally won 2-0
- Malaysia vs Vietnam (June 10, 2025) – originally won 4-0
Both results were annulled after the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Committee found that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) violated regulations by fielding players who were not eligible to compete.
Under AFC rules, the matches were officially recorded as 3-0 losses, dramatically impacting Malaysia’s standing in the qualifiers.
In addition, FAM was fined USD 50,000 (approx. RM196,000) for the breach.
Bigger Scandal Behind the Decision
The controversy is linked to a wider eligibility issue involving several foreign-born players, where questions were raised over documentation and nationality claims.
Investigations previously revealed concerns over the legitimacy of player registrations, with allegations that some documentation used to secure eligibility may have been inaccurate.
This ongoing issue has now directly affected Malaysia’s competitive results on the international stage.
Malaysia Responds: ‘Fighting for Dignity’
Despite the heavy punishment, FAM has indicated it will not remain silent.
The governing body plans to request full details of the AFC’s decision and is expected to consider further action, signaling that Malaysia is prepared to fight for its sporting integrity and reputation.
Qualification Hopes in Jeopardy
With six points effectively wiped out, Malaysia’s path to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup has become extremely difficult.
