Modified Vehicle Seized in Beaufort Diesel Smuggling Crackdown

KOTA KINABALU, April 2 — Authorities uncovered an attempt to smuggle subsidised diesel after seizing a modified vehicle during an enforcement operation at a petrol station in Beaufort, Sabah.

The raid was carried out by officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Beaufort branch as part of the nationwide enforcement initiative known as Ops Tiris 4.0. The operation targeted suspicious activity involving subsidised fuel distribution.

According to officials, the suspect vehicle — a four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle — had been modified with an additional fuel tank believed to be used for storing excess diesel. Enforcement officers discovered that the tank contained approximately 200 litres of diesel, suspected to be intended for illegal resale or smuggling

The operation was conducted after enforcement personnel detected suspicious behaviour while the vehicle was refuelling at a petrol station. Acting on public information and surveillance, officers moved in to inspect the vehicle and uncovered the modified tank installation.

Beaufort KPDN District Enforcement Chief Julie Julhani said authorities immediately seized the vehicle, the diesel fuel, and related documents for further investigation. The driver was also questioned by enforcement officers to assist with the inquiry.

Following the investigation procedures, the driver’s statement was recorded before he was released on police bail while authorities continue their probe into the suspected fuel smuggling attempt.

Officials confirmed that the case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1961, which regulates the distribution and use of controlled goods such as subsidised fuel in Malaysia. Violations of the act can result in strict legal penalties.

Authorities reiterated that enforcement operations under Ops Tiris will continue to curb the illegal diversion of subsidised diesel, which has been a persistent issue affecting government fuel subsidies and market stability.

The government has urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving fuel distribution to help combat smuggling and protect national resources.
