West Asia Conflict Disrupts 17,000 Travel Bookings as Tourists Shift Destinations

LONDON, April 2 — The ongoing conflict in West Asia is starting to have a noticeable impact on global tourism, as thousands of travellers reconsider their vacation plans due to security concerns and disruptions to regional air travel.

Online travel company Lastminute.com revealed that approximately 17,000 travel bookings have been affected as tensions in the region escalate. The company said the disruptions are linked to the ongoing military confrontation involving United States, Israel, and Iran, which began with strikes carried out toward the end of February.

The conflict has caused several complications for travellers, including flight cancellations, airspace closures, and increased uncertainty surrounding trips to popular destinations in the Gulf region. Countries such as United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar have seen disruptions to incoming flights as airlines adjust routes to avoid affected airspace.

According to the company, the scale of affected bookings is equivalent to roughly one and a half days of its normal travel operations, indicating the growing influence of geopolitical tensions on global tourism patterns.

Despite the disruption, travel demand overall remains resilient. Many holidaymakers are still eager to travel but are choosing safer or more stable destinations instead of areas perceived to be affected by the conflict.

As a result, travel companies have observed a shift in tourist preferences, with more customers opting for alternative destinations across Europe. Popular choices include island destinations such as the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Sicily, and Sardinia, as well as various European city breaks.

Chief Executive Officer Alessandro Petazzi said the company is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia while prioritising support for customers affected by the disruptions.

He explained that the company’s flexible operating model allows it to adapt quickly as travel patterns change, ensuring that travellers can still find suitable holiday options even when geopolitical developments impact certain regions.

Financially, Lastminute.com reported strong performance despite the challenges. The company recorded a 15 percent increase in revenue to €361 million for the 2025 financial year, compared with the previous year. Adjusted earnings before tax and other costs also rose significantly, reaching €55 million, reflecting steady demand in the travel sector.

Looking ahead, the company said it remains cautious about the geopolitical situation in West Asia but continues to expect around a 10 percent increase in revenue and profits in the coming year.
