Malaysia Prepared to Revise 2026 Economic Outlook as Middle East Tensions Escalate, Says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that the Malaysian government is prepared to reassess the nation’s 2026 economic growth projections should the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East show no signs of de-escalation.

Speaking following the recent surge in tensions involving Iran, Anwar emphasized that while Malaysia’s current economic foundations remain solid, the government must remain pragmatic in the face of global uncertainty.

“The government will review our economic outlook if this Middle East crisis drags on for more than five weeks,” Anwar stated during a press conference. He noted that the primary concern lies in the volatility of global commodity prices and potential disruptions to international supply chains.

Prioritizing Fiscal Resilience The Prime Minister highlighted that the potential revision is a proactive measure to ensure fiscal stability. As a net exporter of oil and gas, Malaysia initially stands to see increased revenue from rising global crude prices. However, this gain is often offset by the mounting cost of domestic fuel subsidies, which the government is determined to maintain to protect the people’s purchasing power.

Monitoring Global Impact Economists suggest that a prolonged conflict could impact Malaysia’s trade-reliant economy, particularly through increased logistics costs and inflationary pressures on imported goods.

Anwar reassured the public that the Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara Malaysia are monitoring the situation closely. “We are not in a state of panic, but we are in a state of high vigilance. Our priority is to ensure that the domestic economy remains insulated from the worst of these global shocks,” he added.

A Strategic Approach This potential revision follows a series of strategic diplomatic moves by Anwar, including recent discussions with regional leaders to coordinate a unified response to the geopolitical crisis. By maintaining a flexible economic forecast, Malaysia aims to adjust its national budget and development spending to prioritize essential sectors and social safety nets.
