Strait of Hormuz Remains Safe for Malaysian Ships – Iran Gives Full Assurance

New Delhi – Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has reaffirmed that Iran has no issues with Malaysian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz and continues to provide full safe passage.

Speaking while attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Mohamad said cooperation between Malaysia and Iran on this matter remains excellent.

“Iran continues to give the green light to Malaysian ships. No restrictions have been imposed,” he told the media after meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

He added that the main challenge currently faced is not political or security-related, but severe congestion in the Strait of Hormuz. The unusually high number of vessels has caused significant delays, with some ships stuck and idling for long periods, resulting in major losses for shipping companies.

“Malaysian ships face no security problems, but this congestion is really affecting operations,” Mohamad said.

Instructions Must Reach Ground Level

Mohamad stressed the need to ensure there is no communication gap between Iran’s top leadership in Tehran and commanders on the ground.

“We want 100 percent certainty. We do not want any ‘friendly fire’ incidents that could create major problems,” he said.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated his country’s position: The Strait of Hormuz remains closed to Iran’s enemies, but vessels from friendly nations such as Malaysia can pass through safely.

Background

In March, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held discussions with Iranian officials and received assurances that Malaysian ships are allowed to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

This latest development is expected to boost confidence in Malaysia’s shipping industry, which relies heavily on this strategic waterway for international trade.
