Pep Guardiola Emotionally Bids Farewell to Manchester City After 1-2 Defeat to Aston Villa

Kuala Lumpur — Pep Guardiola’s glittering chapter with Manchester City came to an emotional end as the Spaniard oversaw his final match as manager, with City suffering a 1-2 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Guardiola, who is stepping down after 10 years at the helm, could not hold back his tears as captain Bernardo Silva was substituted in the 59th minute. A tearful Silva received a guard of honour from both teams, triggering an emotional response from the usually composed Guardiola.

The two key figures of City’s dominance since 2016 shared a heartfelt embrace on the touchline in a deeply touching moment.

Match Summary

Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring for Aston Villa with a stunning volley, while Ollie Watkins netted twice to secure victory for Unai Emery’s side. The defeat had no impact on Villa’s secured fourth-place finish.

Despite the loss, the atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium was overwhelmingly focused on honouring Guardiola rather than the result. Thousands of fans filled the stadium with flags and scarves bearing Pep’s image, while a large banner reading “10 years with Pep – Game changer, history maker, City forever” was displayed in the East Stand.

Guardiola’s Legacy

In 593 matches, Guardiola recorded 416 wins — a 70.2% win rate. He delivered 6 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League, 3 FA Cups, and 5 Carabao Cups. Under his leadership, City also set the record for the most points in a single Premier League season (100 points).

Before the match, Emery — who competed against Guardiola in Spain — described him as “the only genius in football” and presented him with a special gift. After the game, Guardiola took a final lap of honour as fans continuously chanted “We’ve got Guardiola”.

Guardiola’s voice cracked during his farewell speech.

“This chapter will always be there. Life has its periods. We lived in an extraordinary time. If I still have the energy, I would stay here.”

End of an Era

It is not only Guardiola who is leaving. Captain Bernardo Silva and John Stones are also departing the club at the end of their contracts. Both received special tributes on the pitch.

Former players including Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson, who left last season, were also present to pay tribute.

Next Chapter

Negotiations with Enzo Maresca as the successor are in the final stages. Former City striker Chris Sutton warned fans to be patient with Maresca, describing the task of replacing Guardiola as “almost impossible”.

Guardiola will remain connected to the club in an ambassadorial role. His name will also be immortalised as the newly expanded north stand is set to be named the Pep Guardiola Stand.

One of the most successful eras in Manchester City’s history has officially come to an end — a decade of dominance that will be incredibly difficult to replicate.

Thank you, Pep.
