During Visit to France, Indonesian President Announces Mandatory French Language for School Students in Indonesia

Kuala Lumpur — President Prabowo Subianto has announced that the Indonesian government will make French language lessons mandatory at all school levels across Indonesia. The announcement was made during his state visit to France, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In the bilateral meeting, Prabowo emphasized the importance of strengthening educational cooperation between the two countries. He noted that Indonesia-France relations have been strong in various fields, including defense, science, and technology. He now wants to expand this cooperation into the education sector.

“I have now instructed that all levels of schools in Indonesia must learn French, in anticipation of future global developments,” Prabowo stated.

This initiative is expected to prepare Indonesia’s younger generation to compete in the global arena while also deepening cultural ties with France.

In addition to education, the two leaders discussed other strategic cooperations, including defense, clean energy, educational research, and the implementation of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA).

French President Macron welcomed the initiative and expressed commitment from both nations to deepen cooperation in culture and education. This includes collaboration in museums, literature, film, fashion, as well as strengthening scientific, technological, and university partnerships as part of the 2026 France-Indonesia Year of Innovation.

The policy of making French mandatory in Indonesian schools has become one of the highlights of Prabowo’s visit to France, which was also used to strengthen various bilateral agreements.
