Portugal Beat Nigeria 2-1 In World Cup Warm-Up

KUALA LUMPUR,June,2026 – Portugal secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the match also raised fresh questions over Cristiano Ronaldo’s sharpness in front of goal.

The warm-up match saw Portugal take control early through Pedro Neto, who opened the scoring midway through the first half. The Chelsea forward gave Roberto Martinez’s side the advantage as Portugal looked to build rhythm ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Nigeria, however, responded before half-time through Akor Adams, who found the equaliser to bring the African side back into the contest. The goal gave Nigeria renewed confidence and ensured Portugal had to work harder in the second half to regain control of the match.

Portugal eventually found the winning goal through Francisco Conceicao, who restored the lead with around 15 minutes remaining. The Juventus winger’s strike proved decisive, allowing Portugal to secure victory in Leiria despite a performance that was not entirely convincing.

While the win gives Portugal a positive result before heading to the World Cup, much of the attention remained on Cristiano Ronaldo, who endured a frustrating night. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner wasted several good chances and was unable to add his name to the scoresheet.

At 41 years old, Ronaldo is preparing to appear at a record sixth World Cup, a milestone that would further strengthen his status as one of football’s most enduring global figures. However, his display against Nigeria also renewed debate over whether his continued presence in the starting line-up could affect Portugal’s attacking fluency.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez fielded a strong side for the friendly, especially after the arrival of four players who had recently won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain. Midfielders Vitinha and Joao Neves started alongside Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes, giving Portugal a technically strong midfield unit.

The presence of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fernandes showed Martinez’s intention to build Portugal’s World Cup campaign around control, creativity and quick transitions. However, the narrow scoreline against Nigeria suggested that Portugal may still need to improve their attacking efficiency before the tournament begins.

Nigeria also deserve credit for making the contest competitive. Although Portugal had more individual star power, Nigeria showed resilience after falling behind and managed to trouble the European side before eventually conceding late in the game.

For Portugal, the result is useful, but the performance leaves mixed signals. Neto and Conceicao delivered important attacking contributions, while the midfield looked strong on paper. However, Ronaldo’s missed opportunities and Portugal’s inability to dominate the match completely may give Martinez several issues to assess before the team’s opening World Cup fixture.

Portugal are scheduled to leave on Friday to set up their base camp in Palm Beach, Florida, ahead of the tournament. The team will begin their World Cup campaign on June 17 in Houston against the Democratic Republic of Congo, before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

The match against Nigeria therefore served as an important final test for Portugal’s squad balance, attacking structure and overall readiness. While the team managed to win, the performance showed that there is still room for improvement if Portugal want to make a deep run at the World Cup.

Ronaldo’s role will likely remain one of the biggest talking points. His experience, leadership and goal-scoring record remain valuable, but Portugal also have several younger attacking options capable of bringing pace and movement to the front line.

With the World Cup approaching, Martinez must decide how best to combine Portugal’s established stars with its new generation of talent. The win over Nigeria may have delivered the result Portugal wanted, but it also highlighted the decisions that still need to be made before the tournament begins
