KUALA LUMPUR,June,2026 – Flood evacuees in Perak increased sharply overnight, with 92 people from 33 families housed at temporary relief centres as of Monday morning, compared with 17 people from eight families the night before.

The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, or JPBN, said two temporary relief centres had been opened in the affected districts ofLarut, Matang and Selama andManjung after floods hit several are

According to the statement, the first relief centre was opened at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Hampar in the Larut, Matang8pm last night, while another was openeSeko in Manjung at 11.30pm.

The relief centre at SK B recor41 eva,Kampung Batu 25, Kampung Berjaya, Kampung Batu 23 and Sungai Rotan.

Meanwhile, the relief centre at SK Beruas in Manjung housed 51 evacuees from 19 families from flood-hit areas in Kampung Kilang, Taman Anggerik Permai and Kampung Pulau Kabung.

The sudden rise in evacuees shows that the flood situation in Perak worsened overnight, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The opening of two relief centres also indicates that authorities are preparing for continued monitoring and possible further evacuations if weather conditions remain unstable.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department, MetMalaysia, issued a thunderstorm warning at 5.30am for several areas in Perak, including Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Bagan Datuk, Manjung and Hilir Perak.

The warning is significant because heavy rain and thunderstorms can worsen flooding, especially in areas where rivers are already high or drainage systems are under pressure.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage also reported that water levels in Sungai Perak in the districts of Hilir Perak and Bagan Datuk had exceeded danger levels, with readings of 1.38 metres and 0.66 metres, respectively.

Rising river levels are one of the main indicators used by authorities to assess flood risk. When water levels exceed danger thresholds, nearby communities may face a higher risk of overflow, especially if heavy rain continues.

For affected families, temporary relief centres provide immediate shelter, basic assistance and a safer place to stay until floodwaters recede. Evacuees are usually monitored by disaster management teams, local authorities, welfare officers and rescue agencies.

The situation in Perak also highlights the importance of early evacuation and official weather alerts. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain alert, follow instructions from authorities and avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers.

Floods can develop quickly during periods of heavy rain, especially at night when visibility is poor. Families living near rivers, drainage channels or low-lying areas should prepare important documents, medicine, basic clothing and emergency supplies in case evacuation becomes necessary.

The affected areas in Larut, Matang and Selama and Manjung will likely remain under close monitoring as authorities assess river levels, rainfall patterns and road conditions.

For now, the number of evacuees remains at 92 people from 33 families, but the figure may change depending on weather developments and the condition of flood-hit villages.

The latest flood situation in Perak is a reminder that Malaysia remains vulnerable to sudden weather-related disasters, particularly during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Continuous monitoring by JPBN, MetMalaysia and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage will be important to ensure residents are moved to safety when needed.
