Brazil Survive Japan Scare as Martinelli Scores Late Winner to Reach Last 16

KUALA LUMPUR, JUNE 2026 — Gabriel Martinelli became Brazil’s hero after scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to help the five-time world champions defeat Japan 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

The thrilling knockout clash saw Brazil pushed to the limit by a disciplined and fearless Japan side, who took the lead in the first half and came close to producing one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.

Japan opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, who capitalised on a defensive mistake before firing past Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The goal gave Japan confidence and forced Brazil to chase the game. The Samurai Blue defended with intensity, closed down spaces quickly and frustrated Brazil’s attacking rhythm throughout the first half.

Brazil returned after the break with more urgency and finally found the equaliser in the 56th minute. Casemiro rose strongly at the far post to head home a cross from Gabriel Magalhaes, bringing Brazil back into the match.

The goal shifted momentum as Brazil began to dominate possession and create more dangerous chances. Vinicius Junior came close to scoring after a brilliant run, but Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced an important save to keep the score level.

As the match looked set for extra time, Martinelli delivered the decisive moment in the 95th minute. Bruno Guimaraes slipped a clever pass into the box, and Martinelli finished calmly to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory for Brazil.

The late goal sparked wild celebrations among Brazilian players and fans, while Japan were left heartbroken after a brave performance that pushed one of the tournament favourites to the final moments.

For Brazil, the win keeps their World Cup campaign alive and confirms their place among the final 16 teams. The result also continues Brazil’s strong knockout-stage tradition, as they aim to chase a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s second-half adjustments proved important, with Brazil showing greater tempo, sharper movement and more attacking purpose after the interval.

Japan, meanwhile, exit the tournament with pride despite the defeat. Their organisation, discipline and fighting spirit made them a difficult opponent and showed how much progress the team has made on the world stage.

Brazil will now turn their focus to the Round of 16, where they are expected to face either Norway or Ivory Coast. After surviving a major scare against Japan, Brazil know they must improve if they want to go deeper in the tournament.

Martinelli’s late winner will be remembered as one of the most dramatic moments of Brazil’s World Cup 2026 campaign so far, proving once again that knockout football can change in a matter of seconds.
