Police Bust Miri Drug Syndicate, Seize RM2.75 Million in Methamphetamine

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Police have dismantled a drug distribution syndicate in Miri following the arrest of a man and the seizure of 55 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine valued at RM2.75 million.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the operation involved two raids conducted on July 8. The first raid took place at a house along Jalan Cahaya near the Miri Bypass, where officers arrested a 27-year-old suspect and discovered 30 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine.

Information obtained following the arrest led police to another house on Jalan Acacia in Miri, where an additional 25 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine was found. Officers also seized a Proton Iswara believed to have been used by the suspect for drug distribution activities.

The total drug seizure was estimated to be worth RM2.75 million and could have supplied approximately 275,000 drug users, according to the police.

Investigations found that the suspect had allegedly worked as a runner for the syndicate since June. He reportedly received instructions through the Telegram messaging application and used a contactless delivery method to distribute the drugs.

Police said the man was believed to have received RM7,000 for his involvement and had been promised RM15,000 for every completed drug-delivery assignment.

The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and was found to have one previous criminal record and one drug-related record. He was initially remanded from July 9 to July 15, with the detention later extended until July 20 to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which covers drug trafficking offences and carries severe penalties upon conviction.

Police investigations are continuing to identify other individuals connected to the syndicate and determine the source and intended distribution network of the seized drugs.
