KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – United States President Donald Trump has set his sights on another FIFA World Cup hosting opportunity, expressing his desire for the country to stage the 2038 tournament without Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the remarks during a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in Manhattan on Friday, where he appeared alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino following the success of the 2026 World Cup.
The United States hosted the expanded 48-team tournament with neighbouring Canada and Mexico. However, Trump suggested that a future edition should be held exclusively on American soil, saying: “This time we’ll leave Mexico and Canada out.”
His statement represented an early expression of interest rather than a formal bid. FIFA has not announced the host of the 2038 World Cup, and an official bidding process for the tournament has yet to produce a confirmed candidate or winner.
During the reception, Trump and Infantino praised the organisation and public response to the 2026 tournament, which recorded strong attendance across its host cities.
Infantino credited Trump with supporting the competition, while the US president said the tournament demonstrated that the United States had developed into a genuine football nation. The event was attended by around 300 guests, including Brazilian football legend Ronaldo, FIFA officials and other dignitaries.
The United States, Canada and Mexico were officially awarded the 2026 hosting rights in 2018 during Trump’s first presidential term. The competition became the first men’s World Cup to feature 48 national teams and the first to be jointly hosted by three countries.
The United States had previously hosted the men’s World Cup independently in 1994. A successful 2038 bid would therefore give the country its third opportunity to stage matches in football’s biggest international competition.
Trump’s remarks came ahead of the 2026 World Cup final between defending champions Argentina and Spain at New York/New Jersey Stadium. The White House confirmed that he would attend the match alongside Infantino and participate in the trophy presentation.
Trump’s involvement in the tournament has also attracted controversy. He previously acknowledged contacting Infantino to request a review of the red card issued to United States striker Folarin Balogun.
FIFA later suspended Balogun’s automatic one-match ban, allowing him to play against Belgium in the round of 16. However, the governing body maintained that Trump did not influence the disciplinary decision. Belgium eventually eliminated the United States with a 4-1 victory.
The 2030 World Cup has already been awarded primarily to Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with centenary matches planned in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Saudi Arabia has been selected to host the 2034 edition through a FIFA process intended to maintain balance and rotation among the continental confederations.
