Lando Norris Wins 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — Lando Norris delivered a commanding performance at the Hungaroring to win the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, ending McLaren’s long wait for a victory this season.

The reigning Formula One world champion crossed the finish line 15.080 seconds ahead of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, while Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third place. The result marked Norris’ first Grand Prix victory of the year and earned McLaren a significant boost ahead of the second half of the season.

Norris completed the 70-lap race in one hour, 39 minutes and 56.180 seconds after recovering from losing the lead at the start. Oscar Piastri moved ahead during the opening lap, but Norris remained within striking distance before regaining control through strong pace and an effective pit-stop strategy.

Once he returned to the front, the British driver built a comfortable advantage and managed his tyres through the closing stages. Norris later described the McLaren as one of the best cars he had driven, saying its pace allowed him to remain confident throughout the race.

Verstappen produced a strong recovery to secure second place despite initially doubting whether a podium finish was possible. The Red Bull driver used the car’s braking performance to make several decisive moves and successfully held off Antonelli during the final laps.

Antonelli strengthened his position at the top of the drivers’ championship by finishing third. The Mercedes driver had started seventh and relied on strategy and consistent pace to move through the field, although traffic prevented him from mounting a late challenge against Verstappen.

Charles Leclerc was classified fourth for Ferrari, with teammate Lewis Hamilton dropping to fifth after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Hamilton had crossed the finish line in fourth place, but the penalty promoted Leclerc ahead of him in the final classification. The seven-time world champion had been involved in several close battles during the race, including contests with Verstappen and Antonelli.

Isack Hadjar finished sixth for Red Bull, followed by George Russell in seventh for Mercedes. Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10 and collected the remaining championship points.

The race ended in disappointment for Piastri, who had led during the early stages and appeared capable of challenging his teammate for victory. His car slowed and stopped on lap 56 following an apparent mechanical problem, triggering a virtual safety car period.

Piastri’s retirement came after he had earlier made wheel-to-wheel contact with Carlos Sainz. Both Cadillac drivers, Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, also failed to finish the race.

Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, Antonelli remained at the top of the drivers’ championship with 219 points. Hamilton occupied second place with 169 points, followed by Russell with 160 and Leclerc with 138.

Norris moved into fifth place with 128 points, ahead of Verstappen on 109 and Piastri on 92.

Mercedes continued to lead the constructors’ championship with 379 points, while Ferrari remained second on 307. McLaren strengthened its hold on third place with 220 points, ahead of Red Bull on 177.

The victory provided an important breakthrough for Norris and McLaren after a challenging opening half of the season. It also demonstrated that the team remains capable of competing for victories despite Mercedes and Ferrari holding stronger positions in the constructors’ standings.

With the championship entering its next phase, Antonelli maintains a substantial lead in the drivers’ competition, but Norris’ performance in Hungary could signal a more competitive challenge from McLaren during the remaining races of the 2026 campaign.
