Andrea Pirlo Ruled Out as Italy Head Coach After Russian Betting Controversy

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo has officially confirmed that he will not be appointed as the next head coach of the Italy national football team following controversy surrounding his commercial partnership with Russian betting company Fonbet.

Pirlo had emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Gennaro Gattuso and guide the Azzurri through a rebuilding phase. However, the appointment process was halted after growing political and institutional criticism over his role as a global ambassador for the Russian bookmaker.

The former AC Milan and Juventus midfielder revealed that he was informed the previous evening that his candidacy had been withdrawn.

Pirlo admitted he was deeply disappointed by the controversy, saying he had hoped to lead his country but respected the federation’s decision.

He stressed that his partnership with Fonbet was purely a commercial agreement related to sports marketing and had no political significance. Pirlo rejected attempts to link his professional contract with any political stance or support for Russia.

Throughout his playing and coaching career, Pirlo said he had always respected the laws of every country where he worked and fulfilled his contractual obligations professionally.

The controversy centered on his position as a global ambassador for Fonbet, one of Russia’s largest betting companies.

Criticism intensified after Pirlo and former Italy defender Marco Materazzi attended the Russian Cup Final in Moscow earlier this year and participated in promotional events organized by the betting company.

The visit drew significant attention because it took place while the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues. Public criticism increased further due to the presence of Russian entertainers known for publicly supporting the invasion of Ukraine.

Fonbet has also faced commercial restrictions across Europe since the outbreak of the war, with several football partnerships being suspended or terminated.

Beyond the betting controversy, some football analysts questioned whether Pirlo had sufficient coaching experience to lead one of Europe’s biggest national teams.

Although widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in football history and a key member of Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup-winning squad, Pirlo’s managerial career has yet to match his achievements as a player.

Pirlo previously managed Juventus for one season before coaching Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey and Sampdoria in Italy’s Serie B. He later took charge of United FC in the United Arab Emirates’ second division, where he successfully guided the club to promotion.

His withdrawal has also triggered internal uncertainty within the Italian Football Federation.

Technical director Paolo Maldini was reportedly one of Pirlo’s strongest supporters. However, federation president Giovanni Malagò ultimately decided not to proceed with the appointment following mounting public and political pressure.

Italian media have also reported that Maldini and his adviser Leonardo could step down after their football project collapsed just weeks after its formation.

The latest developments have added further instability to Italian football as the federation attempts to rebuild the national team following a series of disappointing international campaigns.

Italy has reportedly failed to qualify for three consecutive FIFA World Cups, increasing pressure on federation officials to appoint a coach capable of restoring the nation’s status among football’s elite.

Before Pirlo emerged as a leading candidate, Italy had reportedly explored the possibility of appointing Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. However, neither manager accepted the position.

The federation must now continue its search for both a new head coach and potentially a new technical director ahead of upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Turkey, Belgium and France.

Pirlo’s case has reignited debate over the relationship between football, sports betting sponsorships and the responsibilities of high-profile athletes in politically sensitive situations.

While Pirlo maintains that his commercial activities were entirely separate from politics, the controversy ultimately ended his opportunity to take charge of the Italy national team.
