Leeds United Rally from Two Goals Down to Beat Liverpool 4-2 in Chicago Friendly

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 – Leeds United staged an impressive comeback from two goals down to defeat Liverpool 4-2 in an entertaining pre-season friendly at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Liverpool appeared to be in complete control during the opening half, taking a 2-0 lead through Luke Chambers and new signing Florian Wirtz. The Reds’ attacking display, featuring the first pre-season appearances of Wirtz and Alexander Isak, suggested they were on course for another comfortable victory under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

However, the match changed dramatically after the break as Leeds manager Daniel Farke introduced several experienced players from the bench, including Brenden Aaronson, Sean Longstaff and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The substitutions transformed Leeds’ performance, with Aaronson reducing the deficit before Calvert-Lewin equalised to spark an extraordinary turnaround. Longstaff then put Leeds ahead, while Calvert-Lewin added his second goal of the match to seal an emphatic 4-2 victory.

Leeds scored all four goals within a remarkable 25-minute spell, taking full advantage of Liverpool’s defensive lapses following wholesale changes to Iraola’s lineup.

The result marked Liverpool’s first defeat of the pre-season campaign after earlier victories against Sunderland and Wrexham during their tour of the United States.

While the first half highlighted Liverpool’s attacking potential, the second exposed concerns over squad depth and defensive organisation as the Reds struggled to maintain their intensity after multiple substitutions.

Wirtz impressed on his debut by finding the net before halftime, while Isak also showed encouraging signs as both new arrivals continue adapting to Iraola’s tactical system.

For Leeds, the victory provided another positive indication ahead of the new Premier League season. The performances of Aaronson, Longstaff and Calvert-Lewin demonstrated the strength and experience available within Daniel Farke’s squad.

Calvert-Lewin, in particular, delivered an outstanding display after coming off the bench, scoring twice and causing constant problems for Liverpool’s reshuffled defence.

The friendly attracted a crowd of 49,128 spectators, reflecting the growing popularity of both English clubs in the United States and the continued success of the Premier League’s international pre-season tours.

Although the match carried no competitive significance, it offered valuable lessons for both managers before the start of the new campaign.

Liverpool will now focus on improving defensive consistency and squad cohesion, while Leeds will take confidence from an impressive comeback that showcased the team’s resilience and attacking quality.

With the Premier League season approaching, both clubs are expected to use the remaining pre-season fixtures to fine-tune tactics, build match fitness and integrate new signings before competitive action begins.
