Louis van Gaal Open to Fourth Spell as Netherlands Coach

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Veteran football manager Louis van Gaal has indicated that he would be open to returning as head coach of the Netherlands national team for a fourth time if the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) requires his services.

The 74-year-old coach made the remarks during an interview with Voetbal International, saying he has always been willing to help Dutch football whenever needed.

Van Gaal’s comments come as the KNVB continues its search for a replacement following the resignation of Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the Netherlands suffered an unexpected Round of 32 exit to Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite speculation linking him with the vacancy, Van Gaal confirmed that no formal approach has been made by the Dutch football federation.

He admitted he was surprised that the association had not yet secured a successor, particularly given the strength and reputation of Dutch football.

“I always want to help the KNVB,” Van Gaal said, adding that the current Netherlands squad possesses enough quality to compete for major honours.

According to the experienced coach, around 95% of the national team players are competing abroad, many of them at Europe’s leading clubs, giving the country the potential to become European or world champions in the future.

Van Gaal has managed the Dutch national team on three previous occasions.

His most successful spell came during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he guided the Netherlands to a third-place finish after defeating host nation Brazil in the playoff.

He returned for a third stint in 2021 and led the Oranje to the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup before stepping down following elimination by Argentina on penalties.

Since leaving the national team, Van Gaal has largely stayed away from full-time coaching while recovering from prostate cancer.

He has instead remained involved in football as an advisor to Ajax Amsterdam, where he continues to contribute his experience behind the scenes.

The KNVB has faced several setbacks in its search for a new national team manager.

Liverpool’s former head coach Arne Slot reportedly declined the opportunity to take charge of the Netherlands, choosing instead to continue his club coaching career.

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag also ruled himself out of contention, leaving the federation to consider alternative candidates.

Among those reportedly under consideration is Netherlands Under-21 coach Michael Reiziger, who has emerged as one of the leading internal candidates.

KNVB director Nigel de Jong is continuing discussions with several potential successors as preparations begin for the UEFA Nations League campaign later this year.

Although Van Gaal acknowledged that returning to international management at his age would be a major decision, he insisted he currently feels physically fitter than during his previous spell with the national team.

His recovery from cancer has allowed him to resume an active role in football, and he suggested he would seriously consider returning if the right circumstances arose.

Van Gaal remains one of the most decorated managers in Dutch football history, having won league titles with Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich, as well as lifting the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995.

His experience and tactical reputation continue to make him one of the country’s most respected football figures.

While no official offer has been made, Van Gaal’s willingness to return has added another intriguing option to the KNVB’s search for a new head coach.

With the Netherlands aiming to rebuild following their disappointing World Cup campaign, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial in determining who will lead the Oranje into the next international cycle.
