Johor Tourism Surges as Upgrade Projects Boost Visitor Numbers Across Key Attractions

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Johor’s tourism sector is showing positive growth as ongoing development and upgrading projects continue to improve public facilities and attract more visitors to key destinations across the state.

According to Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, 33 out of 69 projects involving 16 local authorities and the State Secretary’s Local Government Division have reached a progress level of 47.9%. Another 25 projects are currently under implementation, while 11 remain in the approval process.

One of the strongest performers is Night Zoo Johor, which has welcomed 368,784 visitors and generated approximately RM3.3 million in revenue since opening on March 27.

Other popular destinations also recorded strong visitor numbers as of July 31. Hutan Bandar Johor Bahru attracted 112,479 visitors, Taman Merdeka recorded 34,535 visitors, while Taman Teluk Danga welcomed 290,408 people.

Meanwhile, Eco Tourism Kampung Sungai Melayu received 15,188 visitors and generated nearly RM669,000 in revenue. Visitor numbers increased by 143.01%, while revenue rose 219.68% compared with the same period last year.

Mohd Jafni said the positive results demonstrate how continuous maintenance and improvements to public facilities can enhance tourism destinations while supporting local economic activity. The achievements are linked to 12 major high-impact projects currently being upgraded across Johor.

Several other projects are approaching completion, including the Sultan Ibrahim Building in Bukit Timbalan, the Kampung Mohd Amin flood mitigation project, the Jalan Dato Sulaiman drainage system, the Tanjung Langsat Crocodile Sanctuary and the Sungai Lebam Recreation Centre in Pengerang.

Johor authorities are expected to continue monitoring these projects closely to ensure they are completed on schedule and deliver long-term benefits to residents, businesses and the state’s tourism industry.
