Malaysia’s Economy Expands 6.0% in Q2 2026, Beating Preliminary Estimate

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Malaysia’s economy expanded by 6.0% in the second quarter of 2026, outperforming the Department of Statistics Malaysia’s preliminary estimate of 5.8%, according to Bank Negara Malaysia.

The stronger-than-expected growth was mainly driven by sustained domestic demand and robust export performance, highlighting continued resilience in the Malaysian economy during the April-to-June period.

Bank Negara Malaysia said household spending remained supported by steady income growth and continued policy support, helping maintain consumer demand and overall economic activity.

Investment growth also contributed to the stronger performance, supported by continued expenditure on structures, machinery and equipment.

The final 6.0% growth figure exceeded DOSM’s earlier estimate of 5.8%, signalling that economic activity during the second quarter was stronger than initially projected.

The latest result reinforces the role of domestic consumption, investment and exports as important drivers of Malaysia’s economic momentum in 2026.
