Ciro Immobile Retires From Football After 17-Year Career

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Former Italy international and Lazio legend Ciro Immobile has retired from professional football, bringing an end to a prolific 17-year career that saw him establish himself as one of the most successful Italian strikers of his generation.

French club Paris FC, Immobile’s final team, confirmed his decision on Friday. The club said the 36-year-old had chosen to step away from professional football because he wanted to dedicate more time to his family and loved ones after nearly two decades in the game.

Immobile joined Paris FC from Bologna in February 2026 and made 12 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring twice before deciding to call time on his playing career.

Across his club career, the Italian forward scored an impressive 306 goals in 599 appearances in all competitions, while adding another 17 goals in 57 matches for the Italy national team.

Although Immobile represented several major European clubs, his most successful period came during his eight seasons with Lazio.

The striker became the Rome club’s all-time leading scorer, finding the net 207 times in 340 appearances. His goals helped Lazio win the Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups during one of the most productive spells of his career.

Immobile’s ability to consistently find space behind defensive lines, combine sharp movement with clinical finishing and convert chances inside the penalty area made him one of Serie A’s most dangerous forwards during his prime.

His individual numbers also placed him among Italy’s elite goalscorers.

The peak of Immobile’s individual career arrived in the 2019-20 season, when he scored 36 Serie A goals.

That extraordinary campaign saw him equal Gonzalo Higuain’s then single-season Serie A scoring record and earn the prestigious European Golden Shoe, awarded to the leading league goalscorer across Europe’s top divisions.

Immobile finished as Serie A’s leading scorer four times during his career, underlining his remarkable consistency in Italian football.

His 2020 Golden Shoe also placed him alongside some of the biggest attacking names in European football and represented one of the defining achievements of his career.

Immobile was also an important member of the Italy squad that won Euro 2020, a tournament that was staged in 2021 after being delayed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The striker scored two goals during the tournament as Roberto Mancini’s side progressed through the competition before defeating England in the final at Wembley Stadium in July 2021.

That European Championship triumph remains one of the biggest achievements of Immobile’s international career.

He ultimately finished his time with the Azzurri with 17 goals from 57 appearances.

Immobile’s professional journey took him through several countries and some of Europe’s most recognised clubs.

In Italy, he represented Juventus, Pescara, Genoa, Torino, Lazio and Bologna. He also spent time abroad with Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Sevilla in Spain, Besiktas in Turkey and Paris FC in France.

His breakthrough came during a prolific spell with Pescara before his performances at Torino established him as one of Italy’s leading strikers.

Moves to Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla followed, but Immobile eventually rediscovered his best form after joining Lazio, where he became a club icon and built the most significant legacy of his career.

Immobile retires with a record that reflects both longevity and remarkable goalscoring consistency.

His 306 club goals, 207 strikes for Lazio, four Serie A top-scorer awards and European Golden Shoe place him among the most decorated Italian forwards of his era. His role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph added international silverware to an already distinguished career.

After 17 years as a professional, the former Italy striker now leaves football having competed across Serie A, the Bundesliga, La Liga, the Turkish Super Lig and Ligue 1.

For Lazio supporters in particular, Immobile’s retirement marks the conclusion of the playing career of the man who became the club’s greatest goalscorer and one of its defining players of the modern era.
