Malaysia’s Exports Surge 29.2% to RM1.17 Trillion in First Seven Months of 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Malaysia’s exports surged 29.2% year-on-year to RM1.165 trillion between January and July 2026, crossing the RM1 trillion mark earlier than last year and setting a new record for the country’s external trade performance.

According to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), total trade increased 24.7% to RM2.160 trillion, while imports rose 19.8% to RM994.71 billion during the same period. Malaysia’s trade surplus climbed 138.7% to RM170.50 billion, compared with RM71.42 billion a year earlier.

MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Abu Bakar Yusof said the results reflected the resilience of Malaysian businesses, although efforts must continue to broaden the country’s export base and ensure future growth is more inclusive and sustainable.

Malaysia is also strengthening the participation of micro, small and medium enterprises in global supply chains through international trade platforms and digital initiatives. SME exports reached RM214.47 billion in 2025, while several product categories continued to record growth in the first seven months of 2026, including pharmaceuticals, automotive products and palm oil-related goods.

Strong overseas demand remained a major driver. Exports to the United States increased 58.3% to RM206.59 billion, while shipments also rose to ASEAN, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and the European Union. Non-traditional markets across Africa, Central Asia, South Asia and Latin America grew 18.2% to RM100.94 billion.

Trade agreements continued to support Malaysia’s export expansion. Shipments to free-trade agreement partners increased 22.4% to RM737.97 billion, accounting for 63.3% of total exports, while exports to RCEP and CPTPP markets also recorded double-digit growth.

The strong seven-month performance reinforces Malaysia’s position as a major regional trading economy, with exports, diversified markets and stronger global demand providing important support for economic growth in 2026.
