Malaysia’s Total Trade Surges 24.7% to Record RM2.16 Trillion

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Malaysia recorded its strongest trade performance for the first seven months of the year, with total trade reaching RM2.16 trillion between January and July 2026, an increase of 24.7% compared with the same period last year, according to MATRADE.

Exports rose 29.2% to RM1.165 trillion, while imports increased 19.8% to RM994.71 billion. The country’s trade surplus jumped 138.7% to RM170.5 billion, more than double the RM71.42 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

Malaysia crossed the RM1 trillion export mark earlier than last year, when the milestone was reached between January and August. Total trade also surpassed RM2 trillion faster than in 2025, when the level was achieved only during the January-to-September period.

Strong demand from major trading partners supported the expansion. Exports to the United States surged 58.3% to RM206.59 billion, while shipments to ASEAN rose 20.3% to RM315.67 billion. Exports to Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and the European Union also posted strong growth.

Malaysia’s efforts to diversify into non-traditional markets also delivered results. Combined exports to markets across Africa, Central Asia, South Asia and Latin America increased 18.2% to RM100.94 billion, with particularly strong growth recorded in Angola, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Congo.

Free trade agreements continued to play an important role, with exports to FTA partner countries rising 22.4% to RM737.97 billion, representing 63.3% of Malaysia’s total exports. Shipments to RCEP markets increased 19.7%, while exports to CPTPP economies grew 18.1%.

Micro, small and medium enterprises are also increasing their contribution to Malaysia’s export performance. MATRADE said it is expanding programmes that connect local businesses with global trade platforms and international supply chains to support more sustainable long-term growth.

With five months remaining in 2026, MATRADE said Malaysia remains on track for another potentially record-breaking year of trade, supported by resilient exporters, stronger international demand and broader market diversification.
