Malaysia and New Zealand Strengthen Diplomatic Ties, Anwar Describes New Zealand as “A Trusted Friend” of ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – October 28 2025 Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong diplomatic relations with New Zealand, describing the country as a “trusted friend” and strategic partner in promoting peace and stability across Southeast Asia.

Speaking at the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings held in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar highlighted that Malaysia and New Zealand’s bilateral ties have grown steadily over the decades, adapting to global geopolitical changes and the region’s economic priorities.

“New Zealand has been a consistent partner in supporting Malaysia’s foreign policy, particularly within the context of ASEAN and regional peace initiatives. We value their commitment to shared principles of development and global justice,” said Anwar.

The meeting focused on several key areas of cooperation, including trade, education, agriculture, and climate change initiatives. Both nations agreed to enhance their economic and educational collaboration frameworks, such as university exchange programs and joint training in green technology.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), Malaysia and New Zealand have enjoyed over 60 years of diplomatic relations, with both countries remaining key partners under the ASEAN Pacific Partnership. Malaysia also views New Zealand as a strategic gateway to strengthen ties with the Pacific Islands.

On the global stage, this partnership is seen as crucial for Malaysia to maintain a balanced foreign policy among major powers such as the United States, China, and Australia positioning New Zealand as a neutral and reliable ally within the Indo-Pacific region.

Political observers view this move as part of Anwar’s balanced diplomacy strategy, aimed at reinforcing Malaysia’s active role in regional diplomacy while maintaining a pragmatic and non-aligned stance.
