New York City, El Sky News — Zohran Mamdani made history on Tuesday night as he declared victory in New York City’s mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim and South Asian-American to hold the city’s top office.
Standing before a cheering crowd, Mamdani opened his speech with a quote from Nelson Mandela: “Tonight, we made history. In the words of Nelson Mandela: ‘It always seems impossible until it is done.’ My friends, we have done it.”
He expressed deep gratitude to his campaign volunteers, saying the victory belonged to “the more than 100,000 volunteers who built this campaign into an unstoppable force.”
The newly elected mayor promised a new era for New York City, stating, “This will be an age where New Yorkers expect from their leaders a bold vision.” His remarks signaled the continuation of his progressive platform focused on affordable housing, public transport, universal childcare, and community-based reforms.
In one of the most striking moments of the night, Mamdani addressed former president Donald Trump directly: “So hear me President Trump when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
His speech also highlighted solidarity with working-class communities, immigrants, and minorities. “Here, we believe in standing up for those we love, whether you are an immigrant, or one of the many Black women, a single mom still waiting for the cost of groceries to go down, or anyone else with their back against the wall,” he declared.
Mamdani closed his address with an emotional reflection on change and renewal: “We have held our breath for longer than we know… Now we are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn.”
