MOH Takes Swift Action to Curb ‘Medical Inflation’ and Rising Health Insurance Premiums

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has confirmed that it is intensifying efforts to tackle the critical issue of rising “medical inflation,” which is placing additional financial pressure on the public through sudden increases in health insurance and Takaful premiums.

The Health Minister reportedly assured that this issue, a major concern for Malaysians, is being addressed seriously, with several aggressive initiatives expected to be implemented in the near future. The rising costs of healthcare, particularly in private hospitals, have been identified as the main driver of increased insurance payments.

Two Key Initiatives to Ensure Cost Transparency
To make healthcare services more transparent and affordable, MOH is reportedly considering two main measures:

  1. Implementation of Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) System
The DRG system is being studied for introduction in the private healthcare sector. DRG classifies patients with similar cases (based on diagnosis, treatment procedures, and resource usage) to determine standardized payment rates.

“The implementation of DRG is expected to increase transparency in patient treatment charges. It will allow consumers to compare treatment costs for the same diagnosis across different hospitals, creating a fairer and more controlled environment,” said an internal MOH source.

  1. Medicine Price Display Initiative
The controversial medicine price display initiative remains a focus for MOH as a measure to tackle high medical costs. Despite opposition from certain stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector, MOH insists that this step is necessary to boost price competition and empower consumers.

The main objective of this initiative is to ensure that the selling prices of medicines in pharmacies and clinics are clearly displayed, enabling patients to know the actual cost and avoid unreasonable price hikes.

Healthcare Access at Risk
The rise in medical inflation not only affects insurance policyholders but also impacts the country’s overall healthcare ecosystem. Higher premiums risk leaving many Malaysians without private health coverage, increasing the burden and congestion in public hospitals.

MOH recognizes that immediate action is needed to stabilize costs and ensure that the public continues to have access to quality healthcare without excessive financial strain. Citizens are now awaiting official announcements regarding the timeline and full implementation of these two crucial initiatives.
