Kedah Urges Enforcement Agencies to Tighten Maritime Patrols Following Migrant Boat Tragedy

ALOR SETAR, El Sky News — The Kedah state government has called on maritime and enforcement agencies to strengthen monitoring and control of the state’s territorial waters, particularly around Langkawi, to prevent further entry of undocumented migrants by sea.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the move is necessary following a recent incident involving a boat believed to be carrying Rohingya migrants that capsized near the maritime border between Malaysia and Thailand.

He explained that the boat reportedly sank on the Thai side, and several survivors were later found drifting into Malaysian waters near Langkawi.

Muhammad Sanusi stressed that such incidents have occurred frequently and urged all relevant agencies to remain alert and adhere strictly to their standard operating procedures (SOPs) when handling maritime security matters.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kedah and Perlis Zone confirmed that six additional bodies, including that of a young girl, were discovered floating off Langkawi’s coast, bringing the total number of recovered bodies to seven.

The state government expressed hope that tighter enforcement by maritime authorities would help prevent further illegal entries and improve safety within Kedah’s waters.
