SINGAPORE, El Sky News — An Australian man, Johnson Wen, 26, has been sentenced to nine days in jail for rushing at pop star Ariana Grande during the premiere of the musical Wicked: For Good in Singapore. Wen pleaded guilty to a single charge of public nuisance.
The incident occurred when Wen climbed over a security barrier and ran toward Grande, wrapping his arms around her and jumping up and down. Actress Cynthia Erivo, who was accompanying Grande, quickly intervened and placed herself between Wen and the singer, allowing security personnel to restrain him. Wen attempted to breach the barrier again but was promptly stopped by the authorities.
During sentencing, District Judge Christopher Goh described Wen’s actions as premeditated and attention-seeking. Wen, who did not have legal representation during the proceedings, has a history of attempting to intrude at celebrity events and concerts. The court noted that although no physical harm occurred, such behavior poses serious safety risks to both celebrities and the public.
The nine-day jail term is intended as a deterrent against similar incidents in the future. Wen had previously uploaded videos of the incident on social media, indicating his intent to gain publicity. Ariana Grande has not publicly commented on the matter, while Erivo’s quick response has been widely praised.
Singaporean authorities emphasize that public nuisance and breaches of security are taken seriously, sending a clear message that actions seeking attention through harassment of celebrities carry legal consequences.
