Apple Reportedly Planning a New ‘Budget’ MacBook, Targeting Students and Chromebook Rivals

El Sky News – Global technology giant, Apple, is reportedly in serious planning to penetrate the low-cost laptop market for the first time, a strategic move that is expected to challenge the dominance of Chromebooks and entry-level Windows devices.

According to prominent internal sources and industry analysts, the Cupertino-based company is developing a much more affordable MacBook, specifically designed to attract user segments such as students, small businesses, and casual users who primarily perform basic tasks like web browsing, document management, or light media editing.

Target Price Below RM4,000

The current cheapest MacBook, the 13-inch MacBook Air, starts around US$999 (approximately RM4,700++). However, this new device is expected to be sold at a much lower starting price, possibly between **US$699 to US$899** (around RM3,300 to RM4,200, excluding local taxes and duties), making it a very attractive option in the Malaysian market.

Powered by the A18 Pro Chip, Not M-Series

To achieve this lower price point, Apple will reportedly use a different processing chip. Analysis from renowned industry expert, Ming-Chi Kuo, suggests that this laptop will utilize the A18 Pro Chip—the same chip introduced in last year’s iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

Although the A-series chip is traditionally used for mobile devices, the performance of the A18 Pro is said to be comparable to the M1 chip (found in the 2020 MacBook Air) in terms of multi-core CPU capabilities. This means it offers more than sufficient performance for daily tasks and learning, while allowing Apple to significantly reduce production costs.

Simplified Design and Attractive Colors

This ‘budget’ MacBook is expected to maintain the ultra-thin and lightweight design that is Apple’s identity, but with a few adjustments:

• Screen: A 13-inch display, which is slightly smaller than the MacBook Air, and likely using a lower-grade LCD panel.
• Ports: It is expected to be equipped with standard USB-C ports, as the A18 Pro Chip does not support high-speed Thunderbolt technology.
• Color Options: Speculation is also rife that the device might be offered in several new, cheerful colors such as Silver, Blue, Pink, and Yellow, appealing to the youth and student demographic.

If these rumors turn into reality, this budget MacBook has great potential to change the landscape of the laptop market, offering a combination of Apple’s robust software ecosystem with a more wallet-friendly price point.
