PM Anwar: Whistleblower Act to be Enhanced to Differentiate Informants from Corrupt Actors

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government plans to streamline the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711) to establish a clearer distinction between genuine informants and those who attempt to abuse the law.

The Prime Minister stated in the Dewan Negara (Senate) that the process of amending the legislation is expected to commence early next year (2026).

Goal of the Amendments

Anwar emphasized that the critical purpose of refining the Act is to set a solid mechanism to differentiate:

1. Legitimate Whistleblowers: Individuals who genuinely expose wrongdoing and deserve protection under the law.
2. Criminals or Corrupt Individuals: Those who may be shielding themselves or their criminal activities by claiming the status of a whistleblower.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while responding to a question posed by Senator Abun Sui Anyit during the session.

Parliamentary Procedure

Anwar added that should the current Act contain any gaps, the Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, will be responsible for tabling the necessary improvements for parliamentary consideration.

The move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening anti-corruption efforts while ensuring the integrity and proper application of laws designed to protect those who report illegal acts.
