UUM students’ innovation: Interactive Mandarin app empowers second-language mastery

SINTOK, El Sky News – A group of students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has achieved a proud milestone by successfully developing an interactive application specifically designed to simplify the Mandarin learning process for non-native speakers.

This innovation, driven by the creativity of local undergraduates, is seen as a proactive step in digitizing language education modules, thereby answering the challenge to produce competitive graduates with multilingual skills.

The development of this application aims to break down the barriers often faced by learners, particularly in memorizing Hanzi characters and mastering the tonal system that serves as the backbone of the language.

“We realize that learning a second language requires a fresher approach. Therefore, this app combines visual, audio, and interactive exercise elements to ensure users do not feel bored while helping them improve their understanding more quickly,” said a representative of the development team.

Among the key features of the application are daily conversation simulation modules and a live pronunciation assessment system that allows students to correct their intonation in real-time.

This success also garnered a positive reaction from UUM management, who described the innovation as proof of the students’ ability to merge academic knowledge with practical technological solutions.

The initiative is also seen as being in line with the national leadership’s recommendation for young Malaysians to master Mandarin as an added value in facing the global job market and a world economy increasingly influenced by the Asian powerhouse.

The application is expected not only to benefit the campus community in Sintok but also holds great potential for expansion to the wider community and corporate sectors looking to master basic Mandarin through a more modern and flexible method.

With this achievement, UUM continues to strengthen its position as an institution that not only produces future leaders but also serves as an educational innovation hub relevant to the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0).
