PUTRAJAYA, El Sky News – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a significant cabinet shake-up, a move widely interpreted by observers as a strategic maneuver to consolidate internal stability within the People’s Justice Party (PKR) and fortify the Madani Government’s coalition.
The centerpiece of the reshuffle is the appointment of Johor Bahru Member of Parliament, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, as the new Minister of Economy. Akmal fills the high-profile vacancy left by Rafizi Ramli, who stepped down earlier this year following internal party shifts.
Political analyst Adib Zalkapli notes that the extensive reshuffle highlights the Prime Minister’s efforts to bridge factional divides within PKR that emerged after the recent party elections. By elevating key leaders historically aligned with the former deputy president, Anwar appears to be fostering a “unity administration” within his own party.
“This is more than just a routine administrative change; it is a calculated effort to manage the party’s internal dynamics,” Adib commented. “By promoting figures associated with the previous leadership faksi, the Prime Minister is signaling a desire for reconciliation, ensuring that the party remains a cohesive backbone for the ruling coalition.”
The restructuring, which affects 28 ministerial and deputy ministerial portfolios, also aims to inject fresh energy into the government’s economic reform agenda. Akmal Nasir, previously a Deputy Minister, is now tasked with navigating Malaysia’s economic trajectory during a period of global fiscal uncertainty.
In a press conference following the announcement, Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the changes were necessary to “optimize performance and ensure the government remains responsive to the needs of the people.” He further noted that the inclusion of younger leaders in senior roles reflects a commitment to succession planning within the administration.
As the new cabinet prepares to take office, the political landscape in Malaysia remains focused on whether this reshuffle will successfully quell internal dissent and provide the Madani Government with the undisputed mandate required to push through its long-term legislative goals.
