Leadership Turmoil in Perlis: PN Accused of Prioritizing Power Over Public Welfare

KANGAR, El Sky News – The ongoing political instability within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration in Perlis has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, with claims that the coalition is preoccupied with internal power struggles at the expense of the state’s governance and its citizens.

Internal Strife and Vacant Seats

The crisis reached a tipping point following the abrupt termination of membership for three PAS State Assemblymen (ADUNs)—representing the Chuping, Bintong, and Guar Sanji constituencies. This internal disciplinary action was triggered after the representatives reportedly met with the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, to express a loss of confidence in the leadership of Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

As a result of their expulsion from PAS, their seats were declared vacant in accordance with the state’s anti-hopping laws and the party’s constitution.

A Critique of Leadership

Perlis Pakatan Harapan (PH) Chairman, Noor Amin Ahmad, remarked that the situation highlights a significant lapse in leadership within PN. He noted that despite holding a comfortable majority in the state assembly, the coalition failed to resolve its internal grievances through proper diplomatic channels.

“This instability was not caused by external pressure from BN or PH,” Noor Amin stated during a press conference. “It stems from internal disputes over who should lead. By failing to manage these issues privately, they have unnecessarily dragged the palace into political friction and jeopardized the state’s stability.”

Changes at the Top

Amidst the friction, Mohd Shukri Ramli officially announced his resignation as Menteri Besar, citing health reasons as the primary factor for his departure. His resignation follows months of speculation regarding a leadership change within the northern state.

In response to the vacancies, State Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan suggested that By-Elections (PRK) for the three affected seats are necessary to restore a stable government, despite the assembly having already passed the three-year mark since the last general election.

The Road Ahead

For the opposition, the current vacuum presents a strategic opportunity. Noor Amin indicated that should by-elections proceed, it would serve as a crucial platform to solidify the burgeoning partnership between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Perlis.

As the state prepares for a potential transition, the focus remains on whether the new leadership can pivot back to addressing the economic and social needs of the Perlis people, moving past the shadow of partisan infighting.
