Fake Resignation Claims Surface Regarding Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Officials from the Bersatu party have officially debunked a viral statement claiming that Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has stepped down from his role as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Misinformation

A document, which mimicked an official press release, began circulating on social media late Tuesday. It suggested that Hamzah was resigning in tandem with the recent leadership shake-up within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

However, a spokesperson from Bersatu clarified to the media that the document is entirely fabricated. No such announcement has been authorized or published by the Office of the Opposition Leader on any of its official digital channels.

Current Status

The party representative described the spread of the fake letter as an act of “political sabotage” intended to stir confusion during a sensitive period for the coalition.

“Datuk Seri Hamzah is currently in Makkah performing Umrah, a journey scheduled from December 26 until January 6,” the source stated. The party has requested that the public respect his privacy during his pilgrimage and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated rumors.

Political Context

The false rumors emerged shortly after Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced his decision to vacate the position of PN Chairman effective January 1, 2026. Following Muhyiddin’s lead, several other high-ranking officials from Johor, Selangor, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan also signaled their departures from their respective coalition roles.

Despite the internal transitions within Perikatan Nasional, Hamzah Zainudin remains the official Leader of the Opposition, and the party urges the public to rely only on verified communication channels for future updates.
