Malaysia Extends MADANI Medical Scheme for 2026 to Bolster Healthcare Access for Low-Income Groups

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – The Malaysian government has officially extended the MADANI Medical Scheme (Skim Perubatan MADANI) for the 2026 fiscal year. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on low-income earners while simultaneously reducing the patient load at overcrowded public hospitals and emergency departments.

Enhancing Primary Care Accessibility

Introduced by the Ministry of Health (MOH) through ProtectHealth Corporation, the scheme provides eligible citizens with free access to acute primary treatments at registered private general practitioner (GP) clinics. The 2026 extension reinforces the government’s commitment to “Madani” principles—ensuring that vulnerable communities are not left behind in the nation’s healthcare evolution.

“The continuation of this scheme is vital as we transition towards a more integrated healthcare ecosystem,” stated a representative from the Ministry. “By decentralizing outpatient care for minor illnesses, we allow public hospitals to focus on more complex cases and emergencies.”

Eligibility and Benefit Structure

The scheme is automatically accessible to active recipients of the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR). Beneficiaries do not need to undergo a separate registration process; they simply present their MyKad at any participating panel clinic.

The 2026 benefit limits remain categorized by household status:

  • Families: Up to RM250 per household.
  • Senior Citizens (Single): Up to RM125.
  • Singles: Up to RM75.

The coverage focuses specifically on acute treatments, such as coughs, colds, fevers, infections, and minor injuries. However, it does not currently cover routine immunizations, health screenings, or long-term management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Strategic Focus on Urban Centers

To maximize impact, the 2026 rollout continues to prioritize 10 high-density districts across Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, Johor Bahru, and Kota Kinabalu. These areas have been identified as having the highest demand for public healthcare services, leading to longer wait times for the B40 and M40 income groups.

Digital Integration via MySejahtera

In line with Malaysia’s digital health roadmap, beneficiaries can check their eligibility status and locate the nearest panel clinics directly through the MySejahtera application. The government has allocated approximately RM50 million for this year’s phase, ensuring the program’s sustainability throughout 2026.
