BRICS: A Critical Pillar for Global Cooperation Amid Geopolitical Shifts

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – As the global landscape faces increasing fragmentation, the BRICS alliance has emerged as a vital platform for fostering international cooperation and economic resilience. Analysts and policymakers suggest that for nations like Malaysia, engaging with the bloc is no longer just an alternative, but a strategic necessity to navigate the rising tides of geopolitical uncertainty in 2026.

The Strategic Pivot

The importance of BRICS (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside its newly expanded members) lies in its ability to offer a “neutral ground” for trade and diplomacy. Amidst ongoing trade tensions between major Western powers and the volatility in the Middle East and South America, BRICS provides a framework for emerging economies to diversify their partnerships.

“BRICS represents the voice of the Global South,” noted a regional economic consultant. “For a nation like Malaysia, which sits at the heart of ASEAN, aligning with BRICS-plus members allows for a more balanced foreign policy and opens doors to new financial mechanisms that operate outside traditional Western-centric systems.”

Economic Resilience and De-dollarization

A key highlight of the current discourse surrounding the bloc is the move toward local currency settlements. By reducing reliance on a single global currency, member and partner nations aim to shield their domestic economies from the “imported inflation” and interest rate shocks originating from the US Federal Reserve—an issue that has heavily impacted the Malaysian Ringgit over the past year.

Malaysia’s Role in the Bloc

Having officially expressed interest in joining the alliance, Malaysia is positioned to act as a bridge between Southeast Asia and the broader BRICS network. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has previously emphasized that Malaysia’s participation is driven by a desire for “economic inclusivity” rather than a rejection of existing Western alliances.

Looking Ahead

As the BRICS chairmanship continues to drive the agenda for a “multipolar world,” the focus through 2026 remains on infrastructure development, food security, and digital economy integration. For the Malaysian public, this shift could translate into more stable commodity prices and a broader market for local exports beyond traditional trade routes.
