KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Former Malaysian Armed Forces Chief, General (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaafar, was charged in the Sessions Court today with four counts of corruption, including abuse of power and criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving millions of ringgit.
The Charges
The 59-year-old former top brass pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to all charges read before Judge Azura Alwi. According to the charge sheets, Nizam is accused of using his former position as the Assistant Chief of Staff of Personnel Services and Chairman of the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (TKAT) to award supply contracts for festive items to several companies in which he allegedly held personal interests. These contracts involved the procurement of prayer mats, batik clothes, and backpacks for the 2025 Hari Raya season.
Furthermore, he faces a charge under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust involving an unauthorized investment of RM3 million from the welfare fund into a private firm. The fourth charge involves the alleged receipt of a RM200,000 bribe from a private contractor linked to military procurement projects.
Connection to “Ops Parasit”
The prosecution, led by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), stated that these charges are part of a wider crackdown codenamed “Ops Parasit.” This operation targets high-level systemic corruption and tender cartels within the defense sector and the mismanagement of personnel welfare funds. This case follows the recent prosecution of other high-ranking military figures, signaling a stern move by the government to institutionalize transparency within the national security apparatus.
Court Appearance
The former general, seen walking with the aid of a cane, remained calm as the proceedings unfolded. The court has granted bail at RM500,000 with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport pending the next mention of the case. If convicted under the MACC Act 2009, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of no less than five times the value of the bribe.
