MALAY-MUSLIM: GENUINE STRUGGLE OR RHETORICAL OPIATE FOR ELITE SURVIVAL?

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – Behind the thunderous rhetoric of UMNO Youth Chief Dr. Muhammad Akmal Saleh, who claims to be the “commander” defending religion and race, lies a far more cynical reality: the “Malay-Muslim” label has been weaponized into mere cosmetic rhetoric to conceal the systemic failures of a party increasingly rejected by the people.

Diversionary Politics: Selling Sentiment, Ignoring Bread-and-Butter Issues

Dr. Akmal’s outspokenness on symbolic and viral issues—ranging from boycotts to halal certification—is seen as a classic diversionary tactic. While the Malay-Muslim masses struggle with the skyrocketing cost of living, declining educational quality, and a widening economic gap, UMNO Youth prefers to inflame public emotion with trivialities. This is not a struggle; it is political theater staged to ensure the people forget to demand accountability for economic mismanagement and the integrity issues that still haunt the party’s leadership.

The Obsolete 1987 Script: Creating ‘Imaginary Enemies’

What we are witnessing today is a mere recycling of the 1987 political playbook. History proves that whenever the position of UMNO elites is threatened, they pull out the “race card” to create a paranoid atmosphere, suggesting that Islam is under siege from all angles. Akmal Saleh is seen as playing the same role—instilling a “siege mentality” to ensure the community remains dependent on them as protectors. In reality, the true threat to the Malay future is the corruption and incompetence of their own leaders.

Exploiting Religion as a Political Lifeline

The Malay-Muslim label championed by Dr. Akmal is now viewed as cheap populism that exploits the sanctity of religion for the sake of votes. If this struggle were truly rooted in Islam, the focus would be on social justice, trustworthiness (amanah), and leadership integrity. However, when this “struggle” only manifests as social media outrage while remaining “subservient” within the Power structure of the Unity Government to maintain positions, it becomes clear that religion is merely a political commodity for personal and group survival.

The ‘Bad Cop’ Charade Within the Government

Dr. Akmal’s aggressive stance, acting almost as an opposition member within his own government, reinforces the argument of an orchestrated political charade. He is allowed to “bark” on the outside to satisfy the conservative grassroots, while UMNO’s top leadership continues to enjoy the spoils of power in Putrajaya. This is an intellectual betrayal of the Malay-Muslim community, who are being used as political guinea pigs to ensure UMNO’s life is extended through sentimental lifelines rather than genuine leadership quality.

The public should not be deceived by loud voices or fiery rhetoric. Without substantive changes to the economy and integrity, the Malay-Muslim struggle version of Akmal Saleh will remain in the pages of history as another blatant episode of riding on religion and race. The Malays will not gain dignity through boycotts and anger, but through knowledge, a robust economy, and leaders who are untainted by the stain of corruption.
