KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News – PAS has officially confirmed that its President, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, is not among the nominees to lead Perikatan Nasional (PN) as its new Chairman.
Constitutional Flexibility
Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, the Deputy Secretary-General of PN, clarified that the coalition’s constitution does not mandate that the chairmanship must be held by a party president. This legal framework allows PAS to propose alternative leaders from within its ranks to spearhead the coalition.
“PAS maintains the view that as long as member parties agree on PAS leading the coalition, any individual nominated by our party is eligible for the position. It does not strictly have to be the President,” Takiyuddin stated during a press conference at the PAS headquarters on Monday.
Leadership Transition
The vacancy follows the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the President of Bersatu, who stepped down as PN Chairman effective January 1. Muhyiddin’s departure sparked widespread speculation regarding his successor, with names like Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Moktar, frequently mentioned by analysts.
Takiyuddin noted that Muhyiddin had previously invited PAS to take a leading role in the coalition. Following internal deliberations and confirmation by the PAS Central Committee, the party has decided on a candidate who is not its president.
Strategic Move Towards GE16
The shift in leadership is seen as a strategic preparation for the 16th General Election (GE16). While the specific name of the nominee has yet to be formally announced to the public, the decision signals a new administrative direction for the opposition coalition as they look to consolidate their influence.
