KKR Evaluates Six-Month Extension for WISE Highway Project

KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Works (KKR) is currently considering a six-month extension for the concessionaire of the West Ipoh Span Expressway (WISE) project. The move follows the upcoming expiration of the project’s principal approval, which is set for September 2026.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that the government had initially provided a specific timeframe to ensure the involved companies could secure sufficient financial backing before physical construction began.

“After granting conditional approval, the concession company must negotiate with financial institutions to obtain the necessary capital for construction,” Nanta explained during a press conference following his visit to the East-West Highway (JRTB) on Sunday.

The Minister emphasized that the potential extension is intended to allow the developer ample time to finalize their funding and operational models. However, he noted that any changes or progress regarding the concessionaire would be closely monitored and assessed based on current developments.

The WISE Highway is a high-impact infrastructure project spanning 60 kilometers with a three-lane dual carriageway. It is designed to connect Gopeng to Kuala Kangsar via several towns, including Batu Gajah, Siputeh, and Manong.

Once completed, the highway will serve as a vital alternative route to the North-South Expressway (PLUS), specifically bypassing the Menora Tunnel area, which is frequently prone to heavy traffic congestion and accidents involving heavy vehicles.

“The government remains committed to ensuring the WISE project becomes a reality for the benefit of the public,” Nanta added.
