KUALA LUMPUR – Apple is reportedly shifting its hardware strategy by skipping the release of a standard “iPhone 18” model this year. Instead, the tech giant plans to focus its resources on its high-end Pro lineup and the highly anticipated debut of its first foldable device, expected in mid-2026.
According to industry insiders, this move marks a significant departure from Apple’s traditional annual release cycle. The decision is driven by a desire to further differentiate the “Pro” models from the base versions, while also accelerating the development of foldable technology to compete with rivals in the premium smartphone market.
The upcoming “iPhone 18 Pro” and “iPhone 18 Pro Max” are rumored to feature major hardware upgrades, including advanced under-display camera technology and the new A20 Bionic chip built on a 2nm process. Meanwhile, the standard model is expected to be refreshed at a later date, possibly merging into a new “Air” or “Slim” category.
In addition to the Pro focus, Apple is intensifying its efforts on a foldable iPhone, internally referred to as the “iPhone Flip.” Reports suggest that the company is perfecting a “creaseless” display technology and a more durable hinge mechanism before its official launch, which is projected to coincide with the company’s 50th anniversary in 2026.
Analysts believe this strategic pivot will allow Apple to maintain high profit margins by pushing consumers toward more expensive, feature-rich devices while positioning itself as a late but formidable entrant in the foldable segment.
