City Hall Focuses on Affordable Urban Housing Over Election Politics, Says Mayor

KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri Akmal Nasir, has reaffirmed that the city’s current priority is addressing the urgent need for affordable housing rather than focusing on local government election narratives.

Speaking at a recent town hall session, Akmal emphasized that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is intensifying efforts to develop more affordable housing projects within the city center. This initiative aims to assist middle- and low-income groups who are struggling with the high cost of urban living.

“Our main agenda is to ensure that city dwellers have access to dignified and affordable homes. While the topic of local elections is often discussed, our immediate responsibility is to resolve the pressing issues of housing and urban infrastructure,” the Mayor stated.

The plan involves optimizing government-owned land for high-density, yet livable, residential developments. Akmal noted that these projects would be strategically located near public transportation hubs to reduce the cost of commuting for residents.

Furthermore, DBKL is also looking into rejuvenating older housing schemes and improving maintenance services to ensure a better quality of life. The Mayor’s statement comes amidst ongoing debates regarding the restoration of local council elections, suggesting that the administration’s focus remains steadfast on service delivery and social welfare for the time being.
